A loaf of Texas Toast style bread

I love breakfast because it is usually one of the easiest and yummiest meals to make!

It is also great because you can have breakfast any time of the day. Even for dinner!

We do that a lot at my house, which is why it is important to me to have a variety of recipes to choose from.

I also tend to create a lot of breakfast recipes because my husband makes breakfast for his crew at the fire station.

He is always asking me to come up with new and classic things he can make.

Perfect French Toast

That’s where this French Toast recipe comes in. It is pretty much the best French Toast EVER!

This recipe has never failed me and i make it all the time!

A slice of bread dipped into French Toast Batter

The flour in the batter really helps to make the outside a little crispy while the inside is soft and yummy, but not soggy.

This is our go-to recipe because I know my kids will eat it up! It also tastes like the delicious French Toast you would get at many restaurants like IHOP or Denny’s.

How to Freeze French Toast

When I make this recipe, I usually do a really large batch. I freeze the slices on a baking sheet and then put them in a ziplock bag when frozen.

When it’s time to eat, just pop a piece or two in the microwave for 20-30 seconds or use the toaster to heat it up.

  1. Best French toast I’ve ever made, thank you. The recipe didn’t specify white or brown sugar. I used 3:1 white:brown. Also used heavy cream.

  2. Nowhere did you mention the amount of butter. I think that is my problem, using TOO MUCH.
Please elaborate. My French toast is usually soggy (but delicious).

    • The butter called for in the recipe is just used to grease your grill or frying pan. There is no set amount, it just depends on how much it takes to cover your cooking area. If you are worried about using too much, I would suggest using a nonstick cooking spray. I do it all the time. Hope that helps 🙂

        • I’ve been making many things for many years and am always learning bgg something new. I love learning a new secret to an old classic and love impressing my friends with ingredients & methods they would have never tried. The minute we become stuck in our ways and stop learning from others is the minute we become stale and stagnant

  3. I have to admit that I was skeptical because of the flour. I just got done making this and it’s really good!! I did use powdered sugar (1/4 cup) instead of regular granulated sugar. My mom did it that way and I always have as well, but it dissolves into the batter better than granulated. I did add cinnamon as well. But the texture was great and it wasn’t soggy on the inside! Thank you so much!

  4. I don’t mean to be dense…I would like to try this..as my daughter is in need of something quick and different for breakfast. Do you cook these prior and them just microwave..or prepare them and cook them after they thaw.

    • Great question! You’ll definitely want to cook this as directed, let the slices completely cool, then freeze them. When you’re ready to eat them, stick the slices in the microwave for 30 seconds and you’re good to go!

  5. This is the best French toast recipe I ever made! I used artisan brioche loaf bread by Sara Lee and an immersion blender to mix the batter. Everyone raved about it and came back for more😄

  6. Can these be done in the oven? Don’t anything big enough to do stove top but I will put them in the freezer. Got my loaf of Texas toast for half this, half for garlic toast

    • Super delicious!!! I used thick slice white bread. Finished it off in the oven, topped with softened butter and warmed maple syrup. Side of chopped fresh fruits.. wow!!! Halved the ingredients because I’m only cooking for myself and it was perfect! Thank you!!

  7. Pretty darn good French toast! I had to use white bread because that’s all I had but it was still a hit with the family

  8. Great recipe! I had never added flour to French toast before. I used almond coconut milk, and pumpkin spice for the milk and cinnamon. They worked well!
Those of you who don’t want to/can’t use a blender; I mixed my seasoning flour and sugar together before adding the wet ingredients with no problems with lumps.

  9. The absolute best French toast I have ever had! Full of flavor, not soggy. I had plain wheat bread, nothing fancy. I only had one tsp of vanilla flavoring so I used 1 tsp coconut extract to make up for the difference. It was delicious and the family loved it too!

  10. I want to know how you thought of using (all-purpose) flour? That’s the best idea ever! Thank you for sharing! I wouldn’t change a thing. I love trying new recipes that others take time to share. Although, I’ve always pt a bit of finely cracked pepper in mine because of my sons whom I cannot stay out of the kitchen for, always stoping by to eat..hmmm. Nevertheless, maybe your hubby might wanna throw in a lil’ pepper for those firehouse boys, lol Only a suggestion cause I’ve already shared your recipe to my family of cops! Again, Thank You!

  11. This was fabulous! I used brown sugar and cream because I was curious: yum! We only had whole wheat bread, and Mommy Mouse was right. No soggy bread and nice browning on the outside.

  12. This recipe was amazing! Made it last Sunday for breakfast and I kept getting “Mmmm this is soooo delicious” Thank you for sharing such a great recipe I had to use Artesano bread since I was all out of Texas Toast. However, it was still amazingly delicious!

  13. This really IS the best French Toast recipe. I made this for my grandson. He ate 5 pieces! I made it as directed. It’s dangerously good. I could eat an entire loaf. 😬

  14. Definitely a hit at my house! I used homemade french bread and followed the recipe to a T. I have always hated french toast due to the sogginess but my daughter has always loved it. She wanted breakfast for dinner and requested french toast. We will definitely be using this recipe repeatedly for future cooking! I even loved it! Will be checking out your other recipes! 😁

  15. I made this last night for the first time – and the entire family (6 people!) ALL loved it! I get annoyed when people adjust a recipe without even trying it as written – and yours was excellent. Thank you!

  16. My entire family loves this! Even my picky daughter! Thank you! The only thing I adjusted after the first few was I turned my griddle down to 310. I can be slower and distracted so this gave me grace to be distracted and not burn anything. 🙂

  17. I made this for dinner tonight and it was wonderful! I’ve never used flour in my batter and was skeptical but it turned out to be the best French toast I’ve ever made!

  18. My husband and I have been searching for a french toast recipe that we could agree on. This is it! Oh my goodness, this is the first recipe I’ve had that I have gone back for seconds. Yum!

  19. Mindy, I was skeptical yet curious about using flour to make french toast. I love cooking and trying new recipes. I am happy to say that this recipe is a Win! Win! It has a great flavor and was very easy to make. It had a nice crunch on the outside and was moist, not mushy on the inside. Thanks. I added a little egg white and heavy cream to thin out the custard a little. Also, thanks for all of the comments and suggestions from your followers.
